It was five weeks ago to the day that my chameleonic transformation from blonde to red began. The results were more than pleasing, but the words of warning from my hairdresser rang emphatically in my ears as I left the salon. Red is an extremely tricky colour to maintain, expect fade and expect it fast! Over the past five weeks I have mourned my colour every time I have washed my hair. Blooded water coated my shoulders, my bath awash with a ruby tinge, my hair becoming less and less red.
Five weeks on and my hair was drab and lacklustre, yet I was torn between my head and my heart. Do I continue my plight for the red tresses I so desired or throw in the towel, surrender to nature's way, and opt for a more maintainable colour?!
These below images swayed me. A girl only lives once...
And so back to the salon I went tonight, having previously briefed my ever-patient hairdresser, and the necessary dye specially ordered in. This time around I wanted something a little bit more vivid and true. I am not shy when it comes to hair colour and I really love the brilliance of the results....
Unfortunately these photos don't fully capture the true intensity of the new colour, and it looks quite similar to how it was before, but believe me, it is a lot more wow!
And so begins my quest again to try and keep this colour as vibrant as possible, for as long as possible! If anyone has any tips or tips for protecting coloured hair, or any holy grail products I should use, then please please do share.
Happy Friday to you all and I hope you all have wonderful weekends.

I've dyed my hair so many colours, but red is one of my favourites! Perfect for the warmer weather! :) xx
wow :)
I love it - not sure I'd ever be able to pull it off myself though!! x
I've been red a couple of times and I share your love of the shade. I know how tricky it is to keep! I swear by the Redken colour extend range, it's def halped slow the fade. Limit hair washing as much as possible and use tinted shampoos/colour boosters once a week. I use a red shaders sachet, you can find them in boots, they're very cheap!
It's really beautiful on you honey, YAY for us (fake) red heads!

looks really good....use henna and horse chestnut shampoo by boots... it really does keep colour going because it is reddish itself and henna naturally dyes hair anyway...i use it to keep my red highlights...and i've had them 3 months now..xxx
Ooh wow! Looks fantastic! My red faded to a gingery blonde which I LOVE - I must be the only person EVER!
Feel free to enter my giveaway here btw:

The colour is amazing! I love it.
Hey, i dye my hair red too and its so hard keeping its colour but I found these paint pots in a shop near me that sells all alternative clothing and stuff, they are only £3.50 and have no chemicals in them so you can top up your colour whenever you need to x
Oh wow!U hair looks amazing! I love it... I would love to do the same!
so shiny. so beautiful. belongs on an advert
LOVE the red. It is truly gorgeous. I would love to be that brave to dye my hair that colour! :) x x x
I LOVE IT !!!
The color looks really vivid, on and you have a very entertaining style of writing, always enjoy your posts :) x
It looks amazing, I wish I was brave enough for red hair! I don't think I'd be able to pull it off though!
I have red hair and my stylist recommended quickly rinsing your hair with cold water (after you've done your regular wash in regular temperature water) because it closes the pores or something and stops it fading/bleeding all over your towels etc!
looks gorgeous.. and YES! you only live once :D love it!

much loveeeeeeeeeeeeeee <3
This new hair colour is just perfection. I want to go red too, but im not sure since im a bit yellow:P I recommend Kerastase products they are the best. Or Loreal expert.
I've currently got red hair and find the exact same, that when I wash my hair the water runs red :(
However, I've found a product that is perfect for maintaining the colour!!
I use CHI organics tone & shine in colour 'red auburn' (not auburn at all definitely just red).
You just wash your hair as normal, and then instead of conditioner, you put this in and leave for 1-5 mins, or 20-30 mins if you want longer lasting results. & it works amazingly! I think its about £17 for a 350 ml bottle but it's totally worth it!!! Hope this helps! xxx
It's super beautiful! I love it xx
Love your hair! X
Wow your hair looks gorgeous, considering it's just been dyed - so, so shiny! x
Wow, your hair looks stunning! The colour is so rich and intense :D I know a lot of shampoos are notorious for fading reds, Timotei Vivid Colour shampoo and conditioner work really well at prolonging the colour :) x x
Love your hair! xx
Love it xxx
LOVE ITTTTT!!!! I am dyinggg to have this color come summer!
I think you should try out John Freida's Radiant Red shampoo and conditioner; of course, check it out online before any purchases are made.

Fantastic colour it looks stunning. I coloured my hair with a dark brown red. But I want it brighter. I'm using a great product from sexy hair it's a colour coat sealer that you apply after you condition your hair which helps keep the colour fresh and makes it really shiny xx
OMG!
LOVE IT!!!
...& John Freida's Radiant Red shampoo and conditioner to help make the color stay longer.

Looks gorgeous!
You should check out Revlon Professional Nutri Colour Creme. I use it twice a week and find it's the only thing that prevents my hair from fading between salon visits. It comes in a range of colours and you can buy it from amazon for about £12.

You hair look s fantastic, such a gorgeous colour! I have purple steaks in my hair that I re-dye every week. I use a vegan hair dye from a brand called Special Effects. The dyes don't damage your hair and they are a similar consistency to acrylic paint so they down drip. I just paint it on my slices, leave it for 20 mins and wash my hair as normal. My hair stays bright with not too much hassle and the dye lasts ages because you don't need a lot of it. It's quite cheap and you can find it online here :) http://www.beeunique.co.uk/
wow your hair looks amazing, it has such a deep intensity right now and is so pretty and shiny! definitely use a lock in colour shampoo. x
That is an amazing color on you!! And your hair is so perfect!
love your hair!!!
Wow it looks fab !!
gorgeous xx
Looks amazing! It makes me want my red hair back! :)
woah that colour is stunning!! <3

Wow, it's so vivid! Really suits you though. I dyed mine a reddish tint last week and it's already faded, so disappointing! We need to invent long lasting red dyes xx
morning ladies
Just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time and leaving some lovely comments about my hair. :)
x
oh and for all the hair product suggestions, thank you. I have noted them all down and will go and investigate. x
What a gorgeous colour. If I were brave enough I would have this colour but alas, I am not. It's stunning and really suits you!
You're hair looks absolutely stunning! I can see it makes such a difference getting it done at a salon, you've got a really deep gorgeous colour. You seem to suit every colour you've been!
Obviously I've never been red but when I dyed my hair dark from blonde it started to fade A LOT and I used a Aveda shampoo and conditioner which was colour depositing in Clove I do believe. Anyway they do a version for red hair called Madder Root which you might like to try to combat the fade!

This looks so nice, I know that for maintaining bright blonde hair you can use a special shampoo so maybe there's a similar one for red? Otherwise I know that some people go for top ups at the salon about every two weeks where the hairdresser can put on a toner to re-introduce the vibrancy of the original colour. The top ups are cheaper than the original colouring and it should keep up the brightness :) This red really suits you, I would love to try this myself one day!xx
Wow! It looks gorgeous!
Redken Colour Extend hands down is the best I've used for stopping your colour fading :) The shampoo & conditioner is fab! There's also a leave-in conditioner in the range for extra added fade protection...I buy mine on Feelunqiue.com much cheaper and free delivery :)
xx
this is amazing! its so beautiful, i love it!
Krissy xoxo
Wow Milly, that looks gorgeous :D xx
Gorgeous shade Milly, really suits you.
The fade of Red hair sucks, but hopefully the fab advice you've got above you'll find a product that stops it.
xx
Wow gorgeous, I absolutely love Rihannas hair in that picture too. My friend using those little wash-out packet dyes you get in boots when she washes her hair, just to add in a light red sheen to like "replace" what gets washed out xx
I love the red hair... xx
JUST WOW! How fricking hot is that, I actually adore it :) It is so so lovely, and looks great on you.
I have a memory of messy carla doing a red hair post, I may be wrong, but possibly could google, and see?

with red hair youre going to need to dye it every 2 weeks or so! a good dye brand is star gazer, they do lots of vidid colours without any harsh chemicals so you're able to dye it without feeling too guilty! love red har, such a horror to dye/wash out though! xx
WOW YOUR BLOG IS AWWWWEEESOME LOVE LOVE IT X

My tips for keeping hair as bright red as possible would be to wash in cooler water, preferably cold if you can stand it. Also wash less often, you always have batiste to keep from looking limp. :) Hope that helps lovely x
Well the hard work is worth it because it looks gorgeous!
wow it looks fab! Dont forget to wash it in a bit colder water than usual to keep this lovely colour...oh and also, you can enter my giveaway here

That is a beautiful shade of red <3

WOW. This colour is such a lovely shade and looks great on you, love it! xx
when i was dying my hair crazy colours that fade a lot i fund the best way was to mix a little bit of manic panic hair dye in with my shampoo so everytime i washed it still popped a little bit of the colour back in. kept my pink lovely and well, pink! love this red....making me want to go back to my colourful days! xxx
That looks gorgeous!!:)
When I had pink hair, I put 1 part hair dye to 2 parts conditioner into a bottle and used that every time I washed my hair, this topped up the colour and stopped it fading. Word of warning though, if you do this, you'll need to wear gloves or get red hands :p
Your red hair looks gorgeous

Hey sweetness - I feel your pain. I remember what it was like when I had red hair. I died it perminatly and that was better than when it was semi-perm - don't know what yours is.
But my other top tip, I did this when fighting the fade and also to cover up roots -
In superdrug they sell these wash-in-wash-out toners little tubes for 99p. On the pack it says it lasts 2 washes but I just used a tiny bit each time. Making each pack last about 5 washes. Use it after shampooing and it just added enough red to keep the colour really intense.

I love the colour of your hair! My friend finds it a constant battle to keep it red but she's been doing well for a about a year, bi-monthly dyes, then wash out ones to keep it all spruced!
You have a lovely blog too, enjoying reading through! X
Hey, I commented a couple of days back regarding a product I thought may help you.. I've just posted a review on it, with before and after pics :) hope this helps!

WHAT COLOUR DID YOUR HAIR DRESSER USE?
This summer, if my job lets me, or at the very least, during my last year at university, I want to dye my hair a really love red, and this is the nicest fake-red hair colour I've ever seen! I'd really appreciate, if you know what colour it is, if you'd let me know :)
@claudia - thank you for your comment. I am afraid I dont know exactly what colour my hairdresser used. All i know is that it was a l'oreal majirouge colour.
xx
Just came across your blog yesterday, its fab. I have had a Deep Red in my hair for nearly a year now, and my hairdresser advised me a while back to buy this 'Crazy colour - FIRE' Its brilliant and is roughly a fiver to buy. You can get it from SALLYS or else Ebay. It really does keep the colour in, i only do mine once a month now. Good Luck
